Kilkenny Castle, Dunbrody Famine Ship, Hook Lighthouse and More

Today was a wonderful day. We started off at the Kilkenny Castle which is literally a street over from our wonderful B&B. The castle was beautiful and only has 3 walls! The fourth wall of the castle collapsed and was never rebuilt. It was a great way to start the day.

We then did our first longish drive. We drove to the Dunbrody Famine Ship. This ship was one of hundreds that took passengers from starving Ireland to the USA. The ship was modified to hold cargo and was not a safe way to travel. If you were first class you were well fed and doing fine. If you were a steerage passenger...life sucked. There was about a 50% mortality rate. However, the Dunbrody once did the trip in 28 days with only 5 deaths which was an excellent voyage. So what made it so deadly? Steerage passengers were only allowed on the deck for 30 minutes a day, IF, the first class passengers did not ask the Captain to keep you below deck. You slept with your entire family in one bunk and your toilet was a bucket that would spill if the waves got to rough. There are also two rows of bunk. If you are in the bottom bunk you had the worse end. If the people above you threw up and missed the bucket, it leaked down on you. So sitting in sewage, no ventilation (the doors to above deck were only opened when you were allowed up), and close quarters = death. They even have two "passengers" one from first class and one from steerage telling you the lives of 2 real passengers. It was a neat experience. Then ironically we also had our best meal at the cafe over-looking the ship. So we ate well next to a famine ship.

We then traveled to the Hook Lighthouse. It was like Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. First the GPS took us to the wrong place, down narrow winding roads. The car was being hit by the trees on more than one occasion. We finally made it! It is the oldest working lighthouse in the world. It is beautiful and provides an amazing view of the ocean. We stared out at it for awhile. I enjoyed finding some tide pools and looking at the different things living in them. They were not very deep so it wasn't anything spectacular. The view was.

Hook Lighthouse
We then took a short jog to Waterford via a ferry. We were too late to go to the Waterford factory but I found a harp that I want when I win the lottery! Then we returned to Kilkenny where I was craving ice cream. So we passed this cute candy story. The door was locked but the owner was closing up. I waved at him, mostly just to be nice and then he opened the door! I got my ice cream and some delicious candy! We then took a walk around the wall of the Kilkenny Castle and enjoyed the peace and quiet of Ireland.

Waterford Crystal Harp...when I am famous!

This lovely man let us in after he closed and let us in. I got candy and Ice Cream!
Love you lots :)

Beautiful Countryside

Today we left Dublin and headed to Kilkenny, but first we had to stop at Powerscourt Gardens. They were beautiful! The largest garden in Ireland. It was beautiful and peaceful and I enjoyed every minute there. I found a tower where I took pictures like I was a princess, I waved a handkerchief and everything. I also took a picture in front of the fountain and beautiful metal work and my father told me I was acting like I was Cinderella. I said I am Cinderella! I am also Rapunzel...and Mulan?! Haha, there was a Japanese Garden in the overall garden. There was also a pet cemetery which was really sweet. Really for today the pictures speak for themselves. Enjoy!!
My dad called this my Cinderella shot. I think he started a trend!

What country am I in again?

The Adventure Begins

As you know, I am a terrible blogger. However, for the next 8 weeks of my life I am going to be good at this because I want to share my wonderful adventure with you! I don't want to brag, just tell you about all the cool stuff I am doing! ;) So here it goes!

We have now been in Ireland for two days. Getting to the airport was hairy, to say the least. We arrived 30 minutes before our connecting flight to Washington DC left. I was barely allowed on the plane because this was the first time I used my adult passport and so technically I needed to be there at a minimum of 45 minutes before the plane took off. Thankfully they managed to get me through security and we were the last people on our flight. When we made it to DC we learned that our flight was the inaugural flight from DC to Ireland! Which meant we had a nicer plane but it was full. Before we even reached the plane they had a party with live music and Irish dancers. It was pretty cool. The plane ride was uneventful, it actually felt short because after 1 movie and an 2 hour nap we were pretty much in Ireland.

Castle right next door!
Above the door of Kilmainham Goal
This country is beautiful! I get to see more of the countryside today but it just has a beauty to it. We arrived to drizzly gray weather but I certainly did not care. It was cold, which did/didn't surprise me and apparently Ireland had received 2 months worth of rain in 2 days. So it was wet. When we arrived to our hotel, exhausted, we were told we could not check in until 3 so we had to entertain ourselves before we could sleep. Immediately outside our hotel is a castle (above)! So I am happy. We walked down the street to the famous jail Kilmainham Goal (below). It is a 300 year old (about) jail that housed a lot of the people responsible for different rebellions in Ireland. Specifically the 7 who's death would become martyrdom and lead to Ireland gaining independence. This picture may also look familiar because when this jail was being saved a lot of movies and TV shows were allowed to film there to bring money in. It was a really neat experience.

Inside the jail
We then went to the hotel and took a much needed nap before heading back on the town. For dinner we ended up in Temple Bar and ate at a restaurant called Quays pronounced keys. I had Bangers and Mash with and appetizer of potato wedges. For some reason I can't quite place, they have mastered the potato. :P. For those who don't know Bangers are a sausage. I really enjoyed this meal, but my mom made the best decision getting their vegetable soup which was absolutely delicious. After wandering around a bit more we proceeded to the hotel and went to sleep.

Going down to the crypt!
Day 2 was a really busy day. After breakfast in the hotel we got on the Hop on, Hop Off City tour. It took us all around Dublin. I have learned/seen that the second tallest odalisque is here in Dublin. Also the lion at the beginning of the MGM movies was raised here in the Dublin Zoo! We then when to St. Michan's church to go and explore their crypt! Coolest thing we did all day. The picture is what it looked like when the tour guide opened the cover to let us down to the crypt. We weren't sure if we were getting a tour or being invited to die there. Inside were 4 naturally conserved mummies! The were 800-200 years old. All of them had different ages. The 800 year old was a crusader and we were allowed to touch him! It is said that to touch the hand of a crusader will bring you luck and he gets 15% of your lottery winnings. The second crypt under this church was also cool. However, this crypt was an active crypt. Meaning that the families buried there are still living and have the right to continue being buried under the church even though they haven't for awhile. This means there tombs could not be lit, or touched by anyone. One crypt had a coffin break apart and subsequently break another coffin. So you look in the room and there is just a foot sticking out of the rubble. You look up to the coffin that has lost its side and can see a white shroud and the remains covered in fabric. It was kinda creepy but super cool! Our tour guide was absolutely hilarious (he's the guy in the picture) and anyone going to Dublin must go here!

Smallest harp ever!
Awesomeness
We also saw the Book of Kells and the oldest Celtic Harp. It was beautiful and all I wanted to do was play it to hear what it sounds like, but as luck has it, its not allowed. I also found probably one of the smallest harps ever made. It only has 5 strings!  We also wandered a beautiful park and saw baby ducks and swans. The baby swans are really cute even though they are grey so I don't think they are ugly at all. (The ugly duckling, if you had no idea why I mentioned this). We also saw a statue of Oscar Wilde and went to the Dublin Castle which is a government building. There is only one tower left of the original castle because the rest burned in a fire. This tower survived because it had walls 5 meters thick and was used as the prison. Try getting out of there! We also crossed the Ha' Penny bridge (half) which the picture above corresponds too, I think you know why I took it ;). For the nights entertainment we went to a Pub Crawl. We traveled to two different pubs with two native musicians who performed and taught us about Irish music. It was really enjoyable. I learned that you are not supposed to clap along to the music but you can tap your feet as most of the music you hear is dance music so tapping your feet is like adding the dancers back in. Also a reel is in 4/4 time and a gig is in 6/8 and they play ridiculously fast! So that is my first two days in Ireland! Check back in the next couple of days for my next update!

The year is almost at an end.

Hello again! I guess I have a thing for the 29th seeing as my last posting was September 29th. Well, this semester is coming to a close. Halleluiah! I have learned so much but I am ready for the stress to be over! I performed my junior recital, written a 10 page essay, studied harder than I ever have before, made some new friendships, and made old ones stronger. Learned that I am ready to have my own room but I currently have the best roommate ever! Learned to deal with the heartache of broken friendships and that I can face life with my head held high.

Thanksgiving just ended and it was the best Thanksgiving ever. My house was filled with wonderful people, noise and amazing food. Gina, Kurt and their three youngest came to Houston along with my Grandparents. I also got to see Alex again. It was so much fun! We laughed and partied. The UT/A&M game was on our TV Thanksgiving day, which was entirely strange since sports are hardly watched en mass at the Trevino residence. Went shopping and bought some new clothes! Which is good because I have lost 20 lbs!!! I have worked really hard at losing weight on purpose in a healthy method and it sure is paying off.

Special shout out to Ashley who's 21st birthday is today! Hope life is good!

Until next time.

EXCITING NEWS!!

Hey guys!

As some of you know last fall a new branch was created in Muncie. The Muncie YSA Branch! Which was a really cool moment for us to have grown enough to warrant a branch. Now something even cooler is happening. In the state of Indiana, the Muncie Institute (bible study) is the only growing bible study in Indiana. While it is sad that the other Institutes around Indiana are not growing we have gotten some attention. As of tonight, President Monson has taken a personal interest in our Institute and Branch! He has asked for us to submit information in regards to our personal scripture study, whether or not we read the Bible, Book of Mormon, or Church Magazines everyday. The First Presidency is trying to see if there is a correlation between our scripture study and our attendance/ability to create interest. We are also going to try out a new pilot program. I don't know what that means but I am excited! What ever they find, I am so excited that they are taking an interest! President Monson will know my name!!! I will be on a list on his desk and I find that so incredibly awesome!!! Love you guys lots!

To a Brighter Future

Hey all!

Yes I am posting again. I'd promise to get better at this but let's face it, I am not a good blogger! That's ok because I am trying and I haven't forgotten! So I thought I should give you an update. My sophomore year went very well. My grades were excellent. I loved living in a suite with 5 other girls. It was a ton of fun! The stress came and went. I managed to over come the Pierne Impromptu Caprice (a really hard harp piece). There are friendships that I have continued to strengthen. I now look forward to coming to Indiana. Winter and I still aren't on speaking terms but I am ok with that!

I have grown so much. I feel like I am no longer the little girl far from home and more like the woman who is deciding to become an adult. (Well kinda, no one wants to grow up too much!) I have a fabulous new roommate names Audrey. We are having the time of our lives living together. Plus we have quite a few classes together so we help each other remember to do homework!

My YSA is absolutely fabulous! Honestly I don't think you can find a better YSA branch if you search the world and not because I am in it. They are so observant. No one gets missed and we just know how to have fun! Yesterday we had our own Olympics! We had 6 teams. We played two rounds of volleyball. We also had tug-of-war and the human knot. We also played three-legged race, 50 meter dash, water balloon shot put and we had synchronized swimming. It was hilarious. Everyone was involved from our Branch President and his wonderful wife to the amazing Institute couple. It was a blast! It was a little cool (58* and I forgot a jacket) so I wore my blanket from my car like a cape. I was awesome!

This year appears to be my hardest year academically. I have my Junior Harp recital November 15th at 5:30. I am learning a harp and piano duet called Introduction et Allegro by Ravel. It is intricate and difficult but for now I am winning! It will be an absolutely stunning piece once I have it learned and polished. I am also playing other solo pieces. I am hoping to get it recorded so I should be able to let you listen to it if you can't make it to Indiana!

Hope everyone is doing well and I will try to update more but as I said, no promises!

Love you lots!

Its been a long time

So I know its been a long time since I have written on this blog, but I am glad to say that I finally like college! This second year has been so much better than the first. I have a routine, I have new friends and I have more confidence in myself. I think I have come a long way from the girl who graduated high school. Granted I have no way to prove that because you guys would see how much I have changed more than I would.

So my college life up until this point. Well this year I am living in a suite, which means I live with 5 other girls. There are three bedrooms, a bathroom and a common area. I have really enjoyed the suite because it provides a way to step away from homework and talk with friends just by walking outside of my room! Also its a lot homier because we have a couch and TV and things that remind me of being home. The other day while I was working on homework, one of my suite mates was vacuuming her room and it was like being home again. Its strange the things you miss when your away from home. Aside from family I miss thunder storms but that's a different subject.

Classes have not been terribly stressful. I've managed to retain academic excellence and will continue to work hard at my grades. As for the harp I am working really hard at that. I am learning these very complicated pieces and am loving it. I have to work even harder at it but that's ok because that is what I am here for.

So who ever reads this you will be proud to know that I have gone on a few dates this past semester. I went on two dates with a return missionary names Nate. It was nice to just go on a date again just to have fun. No, sorry, we are not currently dating but it was very nice.

Over Christmas my family went to Disney World and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter! it was so much fun! Disney was everything I remembered it to be. Tower of Terror is still my favorite ride and Matea and I went around taking pictures and getting autographs with characters. It was awesome. Also Disney has a trading pin thing going on which I enjoyed. You basically just get to go around the park and most of the workers had a lanyard with pins and if you liked one of their pins then you just traded one of yours for one of theirs. It was really fun. We went right before Christmas and the crowds really weren't too bad, however, Christmas day was crazy! Magic Kingdom was filled to capacity (82,000!) by guest who were staying on the resort! But it was way fun and we had an awesome time!

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is everything it sounds like :) fantastic! Its a little small, it only has three rides and 5 shops and then Olivander's which is an experience. The Hogwarts Castle is the best line you have ever waited in. Once you get into the castle you get to watch paintings argue, go through Dumbledore's office, meet Ron, Harry and Hermione, listen to the Fat Lady, see the Sorting Hat and everything in between! The ride itself is phenomenal. It combines imax screens with 3-D objects like the whomping willow to take you on a crazy ride! The other rides were fun too but the ride in the castle is the best. Olivander's is also fun. They allow 30 people in at a time and then one person is selected to be paired with a wand. Your's truly was the lucky person to be picked! It might have had something to do with the fact that I was literally dancing with excitement but hey, it worked! So how it works is Olivander begins to tell you of wandlore while taking all sorts of weird measurements, I think the last one he took was the space between my eyes. Then he handed me my first wand to try, he told me to say "Lumos" and I started an indoor thunderstorm. Next he handed me a different wand and told me to levitate a particular wand box. So while thinking swish and flick I cried "Wingardium Leviosa" and managed to knock over a couple of boxes. Then on my third wand he pulled out a really dusty box while being cryptic and saying "I wonder". Of course it was the correct wand and a light came on over my head and some pretty music. It was awesome! I bought the wand and it is currently at home.

Harry Potter was extremely crowded! Mostly because it was after Christmas and Harry Potter. Also it was COLD! We were riding these rides in about 30 degree weather in FLORIDA. INDIANA was warmer at the time then FLORIDA! Crazy! It also made trying to find a Harry Potter Scarf impossible because everyone was buying them to keep warm!

So that is all I really have to report. So thanks for reading :)

Love,
Valerie
